Located 10 kms from Charminar, the Paigah tombs because of their unique geometrical features are considered as one of their kind in the world. Dating back to the eighteenth century, the Paigah tombs built of lime and mortar in the unique Indo Saracenic architecture remain unparalleled even today. Spread over 30-40 acres of lush greenery, the tombs belong to the Paigah nobles who were married into the Nizam of Hyderabad’s family. Needless to say, they were close to the Nizams and very powerful and influential, taking care of the security and defense of the state. Beautifully carved with marble inlay work, the Piagah tombs are one of the magnificent pieces of art. The detail and intricacy of the stuccowork that adorns these structures is totally awesome.
The Paigah Tomb complex has some of the finest examples of Indo-Islamic architecture and is renowned for their beautiful canopies, geometrical and floral designs and trellis marble fence. Among all the Paigah tombs, it is the tombs of Sir Asman Jah and Begum Khurshid Jah that attract a maximum number of tourists. Made entirely of marble, these two tombs were once etched with various precious and semi-precious stones that used to change their colors according to the vagaries of seasons.
A number of courtyards houses these tombs enclosed by walls sporting a wealth of lattice work and exotic designs, floral and geometric. Each wall has different designs in carved marble, some resembling fruits, drums and serpents, not to mention arched alcoves. Several of the walls flaunt designs of flower vases out of which emerge a variety of flowers.
